Mas and Mba

Mas and mba’

We use mas and mba’ to call someone in Indonesia. It is not common in Indonesia to call someone’s name directly. Sometimes, it is also impolite to mention someone wthout additional mas and mba’.

1.    We use mas for boy

We use mas to call youngster under 25 years old.

For example,..

-         Mas Nurrohman

-         Mas Zalif

-         Mas Novika

-         Mas Imam

-         Mas Ahwan

-         Mas Mujab

-         Etc.

2.    We use mba’ for girl

We use mba’ to call youngster under 25 years old too.

For example ..

-         Mba’ Ana

-         Mba’ Heru

-         Mba’ Tina

-         Mba’ Uzum

-         Mba’ Vina

-         Mba’ Sari

-         Etc.

Lets see the following examples ....

1.    Hai mba’ Nena, kamu mau kemana?

Hi Nena, where will you go?

2.    Mas Rian ada?, saya akan bertemu dengannya

Is Rian in?, I want to see him

3.    Mengapa kamu tak menunggu mba’ Arina?

Why don’t you wait for Arina?

4.    Dimana mas Arya?

Where is Arya?

5.    Apa kabar mas Tyo?

How is Tyo doing?

We use mas or mba’ to :

1.    Respect someone older than us

2.    Be more polite
